My IT Roadmap

IT Fair 2008 is just a few days away.

I been thinking what I need from there and decided to focus on enabling digital media streaming in my house. That means I want to access my digital media like mp3 songs, mpeg videos, jpg pictures on my PC from my home entertainment system and TV in my living room (or anywhere else)

This picture will give you an idea....

At this day and age digital media is very widespread, pictures from digital cameras, songs downloaded online etc.

Most of the time they reside on your PC and can only be played on the computer. It will be very cool if you can access these not only via your PC, imagine how that will impress your guests ^^

This can be further extended to have the ability to record TV programs and store them for future playback.

To acheive this I have come up with a list of to dos

1. Get a Network Attached Storage (NAS) - a central repository to store all media so it can be accessed by all computers/device on the network (as opposed to storing on 1 PC, think network drive)

2. Upgrade network to Gigabit - so I can transfer large files faster. I do video editing at home, so files greater than 1 GB are common. Don't want to wait ages for it to be transfered to the NAS. Need a Gigabit switch and network cards.

3. Get a wireless card for my XBOX360 and configure it to be able to pull media from the NAS and send it to the TV or home entertainment system.

4. Get a new HDTV, preferably Full HD - so my nice XBOX graphics wouldn't be wasted! :P

Any sponsors?? ... *ahem* birthday come soon... keke
